EXPECTATIONS OF THE POSITION:

The Instructional Designer works as part of the team in the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) and helps manage the development process of online and face-to-face courses for Western Wyoming Community College. The Instructional Designer plays an integral role in helping both full and part-time faculty integrate technology, while practicing sound instructional methods. Instructional development responsibilities include: working with subject matter experts in the planning and scheduling of the design and development of instruction; monitoring the course development process to meet course offering deadlines; assuring course design meets accessibility standards, and collaborating with subject matter experts on updates, revisions, and maintenance; integrating and troubleshooting 3rd party instructional tools in the learning management system.

Understanding how to implement the principles of effective instructional design and assessment is critical.  Troubleshooting and experience working with learning management systems are essential skills for this position. Also, this individual must be able to communicate clearly and work with instructors, students and other individuals, through a variety of means including face-to-face, email, telephone, and web-conferencing.  Nominal travel to meet with adjunct faculty may be necessary. 

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS PERSON IS ACCOUNTABLE:

Course Design/Development & Faculty Support

1. Collaborates one-on-one with subject matter experts during new course development and offers consulting services on course redesign projects to optimize learning.  

2. Appraises course creation quality—identifies and provides for developmental needs and takes corrective action, when necessary, in collaboration with subject matter experts.

3. Applies the appropriate learning theory, instructional theory, and applications of media to instructional scenarios.

Technology

1. Serves as an administrator in the College’s learning management system (LMS) and facilitates the instructional implementation, training, and troubleshooting of the LMS and other integrated instructional media.

2. Provides technical support for all CTL instructional initiatives to improve learning outcomes, facilitate technology-rich teaching, and advance curricular innovation.

3. Train faculty to utilize current instructional technology in a way that promotes active learning.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)

1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

2. Two years prior experience with online learning technologies (e.g., learning management systems, student information systems, etc.) and using effective instructional design methodologies. 

3. Knowledge of learning theories, instructional design models, and assessments.

4. College level teaching experience.

5. Ability to work independently, to organize tasks effectively, and to set priorities. Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks concurrently.

6. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and courteously with others. Ability to work with various personalities.

Equivalency Statement
For those candidates who do not meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, will be acceptable.


PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)

1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, in Instructional Design or Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related discipline.

2. Three years of experience as a full-time faculty member.

3. Knowledge of Section 508 Accessibility laws and WCAG Guidelines, and how they apply to online course development.

4. Experience teaching online within higher education.

5. Basic HTML programming knowledge.

6. Experience using Canvas as an instructor or administrator.
