Must have a portfolio of designed learning for supervisors, managers and employees with generally transferrable applicability to be easily modified/replicated and quickly deployable.

Position Summary

The Instructional Designer (ID) will be responsible for researching, designing and developing learning programs and experiences, working closely with others in HR and OEI to ensure that fiscal resources are maximized through scalable options developed in-house, outsourcing and other available resources through a variety of modalities.  The ID will evaluate and build on existing learning modalities including e-Learning, gamification, virtual reality simulation, articles, webinars and face-to-face learning.

The ID will work with the HR team and supervisors to identify performance, skills, knowledge, information and learning styles to create, select and/or suggest learning experiences to skill/reskill and promote career advancement to determine materials to further those goals.

This role will create supportive learning environments that take into account diverse identities and differences in adult learning styles.  Effectively promoting collaboration and discussion through internal platforms such as Salkland and Slack will be critical.  Working with the OEI the ID will recommend, develop and deploy learning opportunities that affirm the basic tenets of civility, cultural advocacy and appreciation for all members of the campus and related efforts.


Content & Curriculum Development – 65%

  • Conducts audience analysis. Sets instructional end goals. Develop a solution design document, which includes course outline/map and course approach.
  •  Serves as the primary contact throughout the development process, for in-house and outsourced content development up to the point of implementation and deployment.  Develops and/or identifies/evaluates appropriate vendors for content development and delivery.
  • Approves both draft and final versions of content, approach, style, delivery methods, user interface/interactions, and course functionality for outsourced modules and those prepared by internal subject matter experts (SMEs).
  • Designs and develops learning content at the Institute that includes compelling course content and engaging activities.  Authors and edits content. Writes the script, storyboards, activities, assessment(s) and final content. Incorporates (through creation and/or coordination) of custom elements within modules, such as the user interface, graphics, photographs, scripting, video, animations and games.  For custom interfaces, codes the user interface and programing architecture, enabling user choices and interactions to function and be recorded.
  • Prepares and incorporate exercises, case studies and activities that enhance the learning process by increasing interactivity between the participant(s) and the facilitator.  Evaluates where collateral materials and performance support tools are beneficial and ensures their creation/delivery.
  • Devise modes of immediate (e.g., tests and quizzes) evaluation to measure the effectiveness of courses; develops longer-term impact assessments in coordination with the Manager, Learning & Development
  • Uses and leverages social media as appropriate to promote learning and development.
  • Adheres to the curricula and content development approach agreed upon by the Institute to ensure quality and consistency. Ensures compliance with Institute standards and style guides. Follows copyright and trademark requirements when using images, video, etc. and allowing materials to remain in the possession of end users.   
  • Develops career development modules for various cohorts at Salk that recognize the critical role of their particular cohort and align with retention goals, initiatives aimed at advocacy, and proactive conflict resolution to strengthen skills and confidence.

Research & Planning – 20%

  • Participates with members of HR and OEI around setting learning and development and objectives and career advancement goals to understand the organizational needs and goals around various learning modalities. 
  • Works with subject matter experts to identify each target audience’s training needs and how best to meet those needs (e.g., platform, modality, duration, etc.)
  • The ID actively researches, analyzes and applies trends and best practices in learning technologies and instructional design. 
  • Assesses scope, target audience and budget to differentiate between learning opportunities that should be produced/offered by Salk and which should be outsourced.
  • Looks for new and innovative learning techniques for traditional and non-traditional training and development for both onsite and those working remotely. 
  • Continually finds ways to develop relationships with outside vendors and demo outside training at no or low cost with potential vendors for Salk.

Evaluation & Misc. – 15%

  • Identifies and implements appropriate measurement systems to ensure learning objectives are being met through the modules being offered. Creates and uses metrics to measure return on investment.  Makes recommendations based on data.
  • Manages outside vendor relationships in the curriculum design and development space for e-learning and live-learning options in collaboration with the Training Manager, Procurement and other members of HR.
  • Provides logistical support in the assessment, development, planning, marketing and execution of approved programming.



  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, educational technology or similar relevant field or combination of education and prior relevant work experience. 
  • Instructional Design certification, advanced coursework or equivalent experience helpful.


  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in instructional design using course authoring tools, media, video technology, and assessment and evaluation deployment and analysis.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with subject matter experts (SMEs) across various functions and levels of an organization.
  • Prior facilitation experience helpful. 


  • Strong knowledge of instructional design models, e-learning, virtual learning, in-person learning and related best practices. 
  • In-depth knowledge and comprehension around adult learning theories and styles and needs assessment/evaluation.
  • Proficiency in Articulate, Captivate, Canva and various LMS platforms. Knowledge of and skill in use of e-learning and virtual platforms and how to leverage them for various audiences. Strength in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Lesson and curriculum planning skills and visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) including restrictions around copyrights and proprietary content.
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio and video scripts
  • Ability to adapt well to fast-paced environments with changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.  Able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Positive approach to customer service.
  • Able to analyze cost/benefit of various learning approaches to determine the best solution to close the gap while managing timelines, budget and resources.
  • Strong analytic skills and metrics aptitude.  Organized program management skills.  Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with persons inside and outside the business.  Skill in self-management, deadline adherence and appropriate follow up. 


  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on workload and deadlines.
  • Must be willing to work at a location away from the main campus (but within walking distance) and travel to and from campus as needed (parking is available at both locations).
  • Successful completion of the Institute’s background investigation.
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement.


This position will be constantly adjusting focus, grasping, hearing, keying, seeing, sitting, talking, analyzing, calculating, communicating, reading, reasoning, writing and working inside.
